Lady in Hat (Hilda Trevelyan)
Best known for her role as Wendy in Peter Pan in 1904, Hilda Trevelyan (1877-1959) was an English actress. Warhol’s drawing of Trevelyan references her role as Maggie Wiley in What Every Woman Knows, written by J.M. Barrie (the same playwright who conceived of Peter Pan). What Every Woman Knows debuted on the West End in 1908, and Trevelyan was highly regarded for her role. Considered one of J.M. Barrie’s most realistic and important works, the play (written before women’s suffrage) posits that “every woman knows” she is the invisible power responsible for the successes of the men in her life.
