Live and Love

David worked with many iconic graphic images including the emotive “peace symbol” -  he loved the beauty of its simple graphic imagery. An instantly recognizable hieroglyph conveying a universal message, David painted it as a direct response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, and as an acknowledgement of the pain to the place he called “home”. This painting is a telegraphic banner promoting David’s wish for peace and to express the sadness and futility of war. David could never understand man’s inhumanity to fellow man; he was part of a generation who still felt the impact of previous conflicts and feared for the future.

He chose to paint the symbol on a really large scale to reaffirm his utopian hope – he emphasized this with the word PEACE underneath, stenciled in a bold black hard-hitting typeface. Once he’d grabbed your attention, David counterbalanced the size and impact of this painting by using tiny inscriptions – near-microscopic hand-writing, enticing the viewer to step closer and discover another layer. You’re invited to to read his messages of love and important proclamations: ‘Love is all there is’… ‘It’s just a moment, the time will pass’. It’s not uncommon to find the inclusion of an identifiable regular character in David’s entourage: a portrait of his mother holding her legendary four-leaf clover. The more closely you look into the painting, the more you see a window into David’s soul - his emotions laid bare, fears and worries, wishing for love and peace for all.

“I really want to make paintings that put some magic on the wall… My wish is that my paintings bring you memories and that they might stir something inside you… That they reflect part of one person’s passing time… I hope they speak for themselves and that they speak to you… That the journey was all worthwhile…”
