All My Loving
Spiller gave himself a mission to put one important word (LOVE) onto a small Canvas. He played around with the positioning possibilities of the 4 letters, slipping the E along the bottom. He loved the way the wall sign artists just added a letter underneath or around a corner, and how the brain still makes sense of a word even when the letters are not all aligned. He repeated the plaintive mantras… ‘I will keep you from the dark’ and ‘all you need is love’.
Spiller often remembered barns and walls from his time growing up in France and Berlin: “Those beautiful blue advertisements on the sides of old French barns as you drove along… I’d never seen anything like it. The sign-writers couldn’t always get the whole message into the space, so they’d wrap it around a corner or run a word vertically. They stood out like beacons in the landscape, and I guess that’s what I’d like my paintings to do.”
