Ed Ruscha is renowned for exploring the relationship between language and abstraction. He began his famous series of word paintings in the 1960s, which included the Hollywood sign as well as roadside views from various points along Los Angeles’s freeways. Lonely Highway, created in conjunction with Crown Point Press in San Francisco, was created along these lines – it features a billboard alongside an empty road, touting “Gal chews same piece of gum since 1970.”
