Long-Sharp Gallery announces the opening of Stratify in its New York Project Space at 24 West 57 th Street, Suite 606 (The New York Gallery Building, Midtown). Stratify explores the works of five contemporary artists whose paintings and sculptures combine and layer materials -- intertwining similar and dissimilar elements, shapes and/or colors.
Cha Jong Rye has joined hundreds of pieces of cut wood to simulate the landscape from which the wood came. The mesmerizing surfaces that result bring “energy’ (or, in Korean, “ki”) to Ms. Cha’s pieces; the artist lives and works in South Korea.
Caroline Dechamby combines two paintings on two different surfaces, setting them apart by only inches. Visually, the paintings appear as one. Properly understood, the artist has placed herself in the paintings with her tiered technique. Dechamby lives and works in Switzerland.
To create his tribute to singer Maria Callas, French-born sculptor Sylvestre Gauvrit has stacked “sheets” of black and white marble to form a cube. From that cube, he has carved the movement of Callas’ rhythms. Gauvrit lives and works in the Netherlands.
Spiller + Cameron create unexpected beauty and surprising connections between fragments of paint rags discarded by other artists. This “alchemy,” as they call it, is a spring board for paintings that transform old into new. The artists live and work in London.
Sculptor Tarik Currimbhoy’s designs are inspired and informed by his training in architecture and industrial design. His kinetic Compression Rocker in stainless steel is based on architectural techniques, and is intended to rock when touched. Currimbhoy lives and works in New York.
Stratify is on now through November 13, 2020; this will be the gallery’s last exhibition in the space.
