Ten Inspiring Arts Writers + Scholars

We asked our team to name a few curators and arts scholars who had widened their perspectives (or blown their minds) recently. We hope you enjoy browsing this list as much as we enjoyed creating it.

“Alemani’s curation is often a work of art in and of itself. Most recently, that includes a retrospective of Anu Põder’s work at the Muzeum Susch in Switzerland.”

“‘WOMEN Together’ is a multi-part exhibition at the Athens’ National Museum of Contemporary Art (on now!). I read an interview with Gregos and was wholly enthralled by her insights into representing women artists… especially in someplace as impactful as a major public museum.”

“Nicole Myers opened my eyes to the sheer breadth, depth, and coolness of Van Gogh’s works, and I just learned that she unveiled a new exhibition on impressionism this month. Dallas, here we come!”

“Intersectionality, beauty, sociology, power  – take in everything you can that was written or curated by Lowery Stokes Sims.”

“I first encountered Raphaela Platow - late to the game - when I read about the Speed Museum’s amazing sculpture part unveiled in 2023. Art made accessible is undoubtedly worth celebration.”

Team picks from years past:

“I’ve read writings (articles, books - you name it) for the last several years. Her thoughts - on contemporary and living artists, the gallery system, equity and access - were some of the first that got me moving in this business. Digest her words - you won't regret it.”

“I’ve read numerous articles by Eleanor Heartney … No matter what she’s writing about, it seems like she’s always building bridges — between worlds, cultures, decades.”

“Integrity and scholarship in the fine at world are gems to be treasured. We deeply value our relationship with these two amazing women.”

“Dr. James’s work is continuously, unendingly awesome. Her exhibits are a constant mind meld of layers and facets of the arts that you (or, at least, that I) might not otherwise think of, like the (artistic, journalistic) power of records and documentation.”

“Forever indebted to Lucy Lippard for her contributions to the intersectionality of conceptual art and feminism (some of which was captured in an exhibit in the Brooklyn Museum in 2013).”

“Eva Respini has curated some fascinating exhibits and shaken up many things in the art world. See, for example, this article (defining the internet and exploring its impact on the arts).”

“I recently learned about Andrianna Campbell, co-founder of "apricota" — an exceptionally cool (peer-reviewed) journal of contemporary art and poetry.”

“The first time I ever read about a Social Justice curator was in this article about Jasmine Wahi; it broadened my perspective about the power and responsibility of the art world, and inspired me to look deeper and broader at my own choices.”

“Dr. Barber’s thoughtful writing and work with the gallery on Lavett Ballard's exhibition, My Soul Has Got to Move, was and is awe-inspiring.”

“Lilly Wei is a master with words. She can feel the emotion in an artwork and express it in a way that is second to none.”
