According to the Artist
Like painting on canvas, working on paper is for me a very sensuous and immediate experience. I love to draw and this is how I started; drawing is the foundation of everything I create and is always incorporated. As with my paintings, I use everything from collage to graphite, all sorts of paints and crayons, water and oil. I save letters, interesting stamps, cards, bits of type that appeal to me, old string, etc. I have a storehouse of materials asking to be incorporated into every piece I make.
When working on paper I often sew fragments of a variety of materials to the surface, allowing the threads to show. Anything goes, and it’s fun!
I am a spontaneous painter and I often work in series, one painting leading to the next and with compositional ideas before I begin. When I am working on paper there is almost no planning.
Sometimes I simply start with a piece of fabric that is asking to be used, or a torn piece from a previously discarded work - or a line drawing. I will then add some other element, move it around and then pick up a piece of colored paper or a brush loaded with paint…
There is a conversation between the developing composition and my reaction; that is the essence of the process.
