Upwards (Palaces)

“I am fascinated by patterns – both human-made and natural – from a wide variety of sources. It is the visual complexity that I am drawn to. They are often very recognisable and have historical, natural, or contemporary references. Sources include ancient monuments, ornament from different cultures, traditional embroidery, mathematical tiling, and Islamic geometry (to name a few).

In this work, I improvised outward from the centre of the piece, playing with pattern placement and contrasting colour tones to create a final outcome that is accessible on first reading, but moves toward a contemporary interpretation of traditional ornament the more it is viewed.”
