New Movie I
Sam Gilliam is perhaps best known for pushing the boundaries of painting, pouring paint onto his canvas and (in later years) removing the confining stretcher bars from the paintings entirely. He began creating prints in the 1970s, encouraged to bridge the gaps between paintings, prints, and sculpture. In this vein, Gilliam’s traditional printing methods were often intentionally disrupted and transformed – a screenprint or lithograph would be transported to the studio, cut apart, and stitched back together in collage.
